Briggs and Stratton 5hp 4500 outboard engine backfire

I have a 2006 Briggs and Stratton 5hp 4500 outboard engine. The engine cranks fine every time. I pull the choke out then put the throttle in the correct position and the engine cranks right up every time. However sometimes after I have given it time to warm and push the choke in the engine will shut off. If I leave the choke out and rev the engine higher than the start position (which is the throttle's middle setting) the engine may or may not sputter and will backfire.

So today, I replaced the fuel filter and now I can push the choke in after the engine warms up (filter may have not really fixed the choke problem), but the engine still sputters and backfires.

Before I have the engine serviced, I'd like to get some advice from some Briggs and Stratton outboard owners.

There is nothing wrong with your engine you lack two bits of knowledge..

First it has a rev limmiter which causes it to miss ove 4000 rpm...so forget that when you rev it up it misses and this is the reason many are sold cheap as faulty.

Second the idle speed is 1300 rpm out of gear ..so you need an inductive rev counter on the plug lead ( from e bay) to set the idle ...then all will be well...

Idle speed is 1900, isn't that hard on the shift dogs?

well it wont ilde at 700 as the timing is fixed .been and checked the manual and its 1300 rpm ...brain going soft ....its only a lawn mower motor after all forget it being special ..you can try lower if you want but if it stalls on engaging gear you will know why.

gheesh...not only are those B & S coming in with faulty electrical faults and other goofy lawn mower problematic crap there dropping like a rock on resell price, my hunch is rotting ethanol is your main problem.

I think you are spreading false information ...they have the standard no contacts coil which is very very reliable if you dont have too big a plug gap and the only electronics is the reve limiter which can be unplugged in 10 sec ..not advised as it will go easy over 4000 rpm .
Ethanol might damage the runbber pipes but as they were made up to 2009 ethanol would have been well known..I think you are just scandle mungering ,,,,,

It never sets well with me being called a liar, mr bonedadog
that being said you must understand how I feel about what you said about me??

IMHO I have seen a few B & S's that had few hours on them and would never cross a river with one...ever!

plug and play...there you go

No offence intended ...I am sure there are many who have the same opinion of Mercury (or other) and would not be seen dead with one on there boat and again many happy Mercury or Briggs and Stratton users....there are even people who trust a 60 year old British Seagull !!!!!
