I bought a B&S 5hp outboard from my brother not to long ago. I have replaced the fuel line, filter, spark plug with the correct gap and have gotten it running. It is about 6 years old and it wasn't ran much. When you take the throttle up to half throttle or more it starts running rough and back fires too. I tried adjusting the carb and even pulled the bowl and clean it out. I need help getting it running right, I;m not sure if I need to pull the carb off and tear it apart to clean it out better.

Re: Briggs & Stratton Outboard

I believe the early motors had trouble with the rev limiter.
Unfortunately I don't know much about it;I would guess it could simply act momentarily
like a kill switch.

Re: Briggs & Stratton Outboard

I think it is the rev limiter. Good thing about that is you can actually unplug it and the motor still runs. I unplugged mine and the problem went away. Thanks anyway!
