not completely sure of your motor, but a basic automotive harmonic balancer puller works with a lot of flywheels. 20 buck at canadian tire. (wait for more informed info before you buy one....as i said, not sure about that particular motor!)

You are correct it is a 1955, 22hp, made by Gale Products Division of OMC. It is a Gale model 22DE10. It is very similar to a Johnson and Evinrude 25hp, with smaller pistons so it only makes 2hp. All J/E 25hp service procedures will apply.

Yes, you need a flywheel puller. Most use the harmonic balancer puller. Use Grade-8 bolts with it, screwed in 7/16", no more and no less. Then give it heck and it will pop off. Forget the mechanic in a can stuff. When you go to put it back on, the shaft and flywheel tapers MUST be shiny bright CLEAN and DRY, and you MUST use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 60-65 foot pounds. Ignore these instructions and you probably will destroy the motor.

Uness they have aready been replaced, it will have bad (cracked) coils, so yes the flywheel does need to come off. Way more important than that carburetor you are trying to get to.

Do it right, and that fine old motor will give many years of service.

You can probably find a service manual at the Ken Cook Company or on ebay. It would be a good investment. Like F_R says, you have a dandy of a motor there. In some ways, the old Sea Kings were more advanced than the Johny/Rudes.

Well, if that is the original shroud on that motor, then it's a '58. Same mechanical difference as a '57. 1956 and '58 models have the name in block letters, where the '57 has the name in cursive. Excellent old motors. You'll love it out on the water. They're very reliable and tough to beat. I've had several of them through the years.

Sorry, it is a 1955. The only year the 22hp was made. Not only that, the serial number verifies a '55. The number before the "X" is the year in reverse. 55X is a 1955, 65X is a 1956, 95X is a 1959, etc

Well, that 18 will push a lot of other nice light duty 14' fiberglass boats and hefty aluminum boats though and you can easily convert it to a single line tank, so you could share tanks with your 22 Sea King. The second boat I owned was a 14' Glasspar and it did fine with an 18 on it. Mine was a year older than the one you have there. That 22hp Sea King will do nice on a 14 - 15' runabout too.

While it is physically large it is reasonably light compared to todays electric start 22-25 hp motors.
Your electric start tiller 22 is 125lbs todays Evinrude Etec electric start long shaft tiller with power trim is 183 lbs.
The lightest 25 Etec tiller is 147 and thats lighter than many other brands.
