I need the Champion plug size for both motors...a 91 johnson 88 special and an 85,10 horse johnson. Also the gap,and whether it's worth buying marine grade plugs or regular.Right now I have autolite 2634 in the 88 gapped at over .040.I plan on putting the boat in for the first time since I bought it and was wondering if I should pop the plugs and reduce the gap to say .030.I'm a little skeptical since she ran fine on the test run at purchase.Any ideas???

According to the manual, what is the stock plug that is recommended by OMC?The majority of my usage will be at trolling speed. Thanks for all the helpful advice.

Both use QL77JC4 Gapped at .030! Although on my '91 Evinrude 70HP, I still stay with the old Gap of .040. Seems to run better at the old gap and has been for years! Your Choice!

The factory calls for a Ql82C Champion plug, gapped at .030", for an 88 special.

The 10hp plug depends on the model number, and whether it came with a thermostat or not.

what's the difference between a QL77JC4 and a QL82C?Is it just a heat range difference orin the electrode length? Thanks to all for the replies.

Not sure where you got that info, but I'm just going by what my Factory Manual says to use. Maybe a call to the dealer is in order, as we want to be sure bquick8 is using the proper plug! And yes,it is just the heat range of the plug that is different!

Called my Dealer and he said QL77JC4 is for "Normal" running and QL82C is for "high speed" running. So both will work depending on the intended use. I still stand by the QL77JC4's!

If you are looking in a service manual or an owner's manual, those are out of date soon after printing. The factory Parts and Accessories Catalog has the up to date info each year. Service techniques and parts change almost every season.

You can use the QL77JC4 or the QL82C plugs in the 88hp and in the '85 9.9hp (it's not a 10hp). Since you are trolling with the bigger motor, use the QL82C plug as it is a bit hotter and will not foul as easily.

Re: Champion plug size for 88 Special ???

Have you asked the "dealer" why he (or she) recommended a hotter plug for high speed running?

Re: Champion plug size for 88 Special ???

Thanks for all the research and legwork guys.As soon as I decarb I'll be changing em out.I have to go with the hotter plug in the 9.9 since the 88 takes 50:1 and the 9.9 takes 100:1.It seems to miss and spit occasionally but keeps running.Any options here???
