Help to identify outboard motor

I don't know what this is. It's been given a paint job and there doesn't appear to be any ID marks on it.

I have no idea, but it looks really wide and not very tall. :facepalm:

I do see an Evinrude 15 cowl in the back ground. Is that it?

No, it's not an Evinrude. I should have moved that cowl before taking the shot, sorry about that. I've been looking at Google Images of old outboards and haven't seen anything like this one yet. Notice the starter cord! It's underneath the motor! The whole top of the motor is a gas tank.

I've never seen the starter cord located there, how unusual.

Have you tried posting the pix on any of the antique/vintage outboard forums?

If you learn anything, please post back if you can. I'd be interested in knowing what it is.

Really old... 50' or 60's maybe

Small. I'd guess less than 5 hp.

Need to find some lettering or numbers (or numbers mixed with letters would possibly be serial number or model number)

Under the fuel filter looks like a painted over ID plate.... Try getting some "Goof Off" applying to a rag and trying to rub the repaint off but leave the OEM (probably black) paint behind. Should then have the repaint paint filling the model and serial numbers stamped in the plate.

I found this number stamped on the base; 2J16, so I googled it and came up with Champion Blue Ribbon. Still searching for year and horsepower but at least I have the brand now.
