I have a 1959 Gale Buccaneer 12hp that I'm going to be starting in the next week or so. My Uncle bought it new in 1959. He's since passed and was with my sister for a number of years and now I have it. It's been kept inside for most of it's life. I found a manual online and it says to use outboard motor oil or SAE 30 MM oil. My question is what do most people use for oil in these motors. Also I believe it's a 24:1 mix. Thanks.

paint it blue and put a goodyear sticker on it and you have the same motor my father has.

he runs TC3 2-stroke oil at the 24:1. (todays 2-stroke oils are a derivative of SAE 30 with a bunch of stuff added).

Thank you Scott. Much appreciated. I'm hoping I won't have too much trouble getting this old motor running. Would like to use it next year.

remember, do not run them lean. the connecting rod is simply silver plated. that is your bearing. if you wear thru the silver plating, the motor eats itself.

I was working for a Gale Buccaneer dealer when that motor was new, and can tell you that it was a very good motor at a value price. However,it had a serious problem. The lower crankshaft seal was crap. And when it fails, water gets into the crankcase and destroys those silver con rods just mentioned. When that happens, say good bye to the powerhead. For that reason, I always tell people to pull the powerhead and replace that seal, whether it needs it or not. It isn't a hard job, so do it. Seal part number was 303804, now 321467, from any Evinrude dealer. Or 18-2060 here at iboats. BTW, Evinrude & Johnsons had the same seal, so it isn't a Gale-only sanfu.

Thanks for the P/N. pretty sure that when I pull the motor off the transom this weekend, I will need to put a water pump in it, a set of coils, the afore mentioned seal, as well as a carb kit. Any chance you have those p/n's available?

tallcanadian, sorry to hijack.

Just use iboats numbers for a 15 or 18hp Evinrude or Johnson for stuff of that nature. Actually, your motor is very closely related to a 1956 15hp E/J. "Similar to", but not totally "same as".

Question.... TC3 is for air cooled engines. TCW3 is for water cooled. Which should I use?? What would it hurt to use either?

Obviously, use TCW-3. It won't "hurt" to use the air-cooled stuff, except the additives used on TCW are better suited for water cooled motors, and will keep the innards cleaner and happier over the long haul.
