My 1971 lm318 is fresh water cooled and needs to be flushed. What's the best way to accomplish this? Should I remove the return hose from the heat exchanger and keep clean water flowing into the expansion tank? Would this be the same as removing the upper radiator hose in a car and keeping the radiator full? Is there an environmentally friendly cooling system flush?

I'll definitely give that a try if I have overheating or leaking issues but for now I just want to flush any old crap (coolant / debris) out of the system to ensure that it's going to work as expected when I try to run it.
