So far, I have not been able to get the engine running however I have noticed that when I crank the engine, the output shaft from the reverse unit turns in the same direction as the engine and I cannot turn the prop by hand which seems to indicate that it's in gear despite the shift lever being in neutral. If I move the shift lever in either direction, the output shaft turns the same direction as the engine.
I've read in a couple places (including here) about it being a hydraulic unit that needs the input shaft spinning in order to shift which (I suppose) makes sense, but is there any way to tell if this is the same reverse unit I have? Is there only one reverse unit mated to the early 70s 318?
