Yamaha 4.3 Shifting Question

As mentioned in my previous post about tilt, I just got a boat with a 1992 Yamaha I/O 4.3. I noticed that sometimes when shifting from reverse back to the neutral position, sometimes the shifter goes back to the "neutral position" but the reverse gear does not disengage, so that I actually have to shift it to forward quickly to disengage the reverse.
Obviously, this cant be good for the gears, so I want to rectify the problem. the previous owner did mention to me that he had had this problem once or twice, BUT he didn't necessarily drive a boat "normally".
How can I go about fixing this?

Ayuh,.... Does Yamaha use lower, 'n forward control cables,..??
Is there at switch where they meet,..??
If it were a Merc, the lower shift cable is worn,....

Could be slop in the lower cable, could be just an adjustment.
