Help Tip: If you have a question that has not been answered to your satisfaction in the archives, it is always best to start a new thread of your own. By starting your own thread, you will receive the maximum number of views by forum members.

Below are some additional forum policies in hopes of all iboats members will follow, Thank you.

1. Please do not reply to old topics or hijack existing topics. Old topics of a technical nature are like a library book, Please do not write in them.

2. Old topics should be considered archives and used for reference only. Please do not reply to them.

3. Do not take over someone else’s topic (aka hijack) with your own question, even if it is similar. If you have a question that has not been covered to your satisfaction in the archives, it is always best to start a new topic of your own.

4. If you have a question for the original poster (OP) and the topic is over 30 days old, send the OP a PM, he may not even visit the forums any longer, or may not notice your question in the old topic.

5. By starting your own topic, you will receive the maximum number of views by forum helpers that may not even notice your question when it’s posted at the end of someone else’s topic. And those answers will be specific to your particular issue.

6. Please do not post to topics that have been inactive for more than 3 months unless you are the original poster. We have very active forums and any topic that remains inactive for that long should be considered "dead". It is especially confusing when there is an entirely new question posted to an old topic.

7. Posting at the end of any topic is considered to be hijacking the original posters topic which in turn subjects the topic to be closed if it continues to happen thus not making it fair to the original poster in the future had for some reason he/she needed to return for additional information or provide an update of the problem solved which is always welcomed within a reasonable amount of time frame.

8. Please note that you should see a red banner pop up near the bottom of each inactive topic asking you not to reply to old topics. The Red banner will read: Please note this topic has been inactive for 90 days. For the best results, please start a new topic.

Thank you all in advance for doing your part in helping iboats run a smooth ship.

    Hi Everybody!

I'm new on this forum, leaving in switzerland and just baught a Swiss boat equiped with Chrysler inboard 80HP (Simca) and sterndrive DANA 40. I already wrote something about it earlier in the morning but I can't find it anymore!
So I need your Help about sterndrive DANA 40! I rebuilding mine at this time and have no idea how to dismantle the Timken Bearing in the upper gearcase... Screwed? clockwise? pressed? I really have no Idea and can't find any informations about these sterndrives on the web.
If someone could give me an advise it would be great!

Thank you at all and have a nice day!

Sorry if my English is not academic...

I have never seen your drive. I hope someone here can help. Please document your build with some pics. I have a pair of dana 90s which I think is similar.

          Ayuh,.... Sorry Breakus,...
I rebuilt my ole drives awhile back, but their the bigger models, 'n I didn't have to go that deep anyways.....

Yer drive was a rareity when it was new, 'n there's not much available on 'em....

I'd have to Guess, that's a Press fit bearing....

            Re: Chrysler Sterndrive DANA 40

            Hi everybody!

Thank you for your response, the problem is that i rebuilt with brand new bearings and seals the lower part of my sterndrive and I think I should do the upper to... The real reason is that last year, with another boat (silverline Nantucket 17V) i've lost oil in the port. Fire men came, with policemen and it cost fast 2'000 dollards for all of those people in order to clean ... I don't really want to loose oil again in Swisslakes!
May be someone has some documentation about this drive, i'm going to wait a moment.

            Bye

              Hi There!

After being in pain with my DANA 40 drive I managed to dismantle completly my outdrive! I just can see that the bearings was brand new.... Anyway i'm going to change them in order to be sure that i would not have problems with my drive : on a sunday, end of the day in the middle of Geneva's Lake!

I will send you few pictures of my work on the next days..

Till here, it was not to hard...

THE UPPER CASE... It's something'else (Eddie Cochran?)

Well, I asked you how to dismantle the upper part because i had no idea of how doing it.

1st: the aluminium tube is only strong pushed into the upper

under this tube, you find a nut with a stop. i Had to make a "self made tool" to pull that nut away and it was really difficult! Glued with Loctite!

I have problems again to send pictures....

                      See you

After pulling the old tappets it was impossible to install the new one, diameter was really to tight... (8/100è mm métric).
I decide to hone the bore in order to enlarge it.

After this very long work, i had 2/100è mm tightening much better to insert the new tappet!
