Starter issue? Yamaha I/O v8 5.0 not yems

i was having an issue with my starter. Clicking but not cranking. i replaced the starter but still have the same issue. When i turn the key my volts are at 12V but when i try to start it drops to 0. If i turn the key off then back on it goes back to 12V. any ideas? I even tried jumping with my car but the same thing happened.

Sounds like a bad battery to me, or cable issue.

Have you tried turning it over by hand?

Yes, i was able to put a wrench on the crank shaft pully and move it by hand

After verifying that the battery is good with a full charge I would clean and re-connect--battery terminals and connectors,all starter connections and all ground connections.

Then make it part of your preventive maintenance every other year.

Thanks Searay that is what i started with. Great post. Bart you are on the money. Even though my terminals looked good it was just enough to drop voltage (even with two batts). Thanks guys.
