shift cable not adjusted right??

hey guys,

So im on to my new problem now and I just noticed it. I've had the boat for over a year and after reading up ive noticed that when I shift my boat into gear and back into N the fingers on the ESA lever doesn't move. Now when the boat is running and I press on the ESA switch it does stumble the engine. So I take it my cable is not adjusted right?

I know I read in the past the OMC have bad shift cables but How do I address this problem.

sorry Boat is 1987 bayliner capri 2.3

Are you doing the shifting in the water or on land on muffs? You will only see the switch activate when in the water coming out of gear.
