I have a 1986 galaxie ski boat with a 5.7 omc motor. I am new to boats, but have mechanical skills. I am not sure how this throttle linkage is suppose to look and how do you know where to set the black knob the spins on the threaded piece of linkeage. Can someone tell me what exactly it does and where it needs to be set?

It's goes into the bracket right next to it, and adjusts the length of the cable shift as well as holds it in place so you can push the butterfly open. Put your throttle to neutral and allow the spring to close the butterfly then spin that little black thing up till it fits smoothly into its bracket. :) I bet you already figured it out. If not let's pretend .

Upon second look at the picture I think that may be your shift linkage and not a throttle, in which case put your motor in neutral manually or find out what gear it's in and adjusts your throttle controller to match then fasten it into the place. I hope that helps, the shift linkage is on the rear of the motor and the throttle is well on the throttle body. The one on the rear of the motor has 2. One comes from the controller and one comes in from the transom, this is so you hit your reverse safety switch or reverse hell I forgot what it was called now, thanks old Forrester bourbon

That is the shift cable, not throttle.

Buy the two adjustment tools, pull the drive and adjust as specified in the OEM manual.

Not seeing where it talks about this in the manual. Could you point me to the right direction or explain to me how to do it?

Some of the OE manuals were printed before the tools were available. Google Midnight Wolf OMC parts he has updated factory instructions using the tools.
