Recently changed the ignition coil on my 86 Crestliner with a 4.3 litre engine and OMC outdrive, after experiencing a miss in the engine on the way in from our last fishing trip last fall. The first trip out a few days ago, while trimming out or in, the engine would backfire and almost quit. This only happened while at 3/4 to full throttle. It did not occur while at trolling or idle speed. After fishing (trolling) for several hours, on the return trip in we did not have this issue. Not sure what's going on, but I sure don't want to have this happen again, and don't know where to start looking.

Take off the cables at your starter and clean them up and reinstall. You have a voltage drop which occurs when you are operating the rim pump. This voltage drop is enough to kill your ignition.

While y are at it, also check the connections at the battery and the negative battery cable where it attaches to your engine.
