I have been lurking and learning from you gentlemen for some time a couple of years ago I bought a 1972 SRV200 Sea Foam Green in and out. Had the GM 250 I6 in it. Well it was a basket case. I am almost done, I think. The floor is done, engine total rebuild, New fuel pump, alternator, starter, distribuor, water pump. Rebuilt the carb, tilt motor, trim motor, upper and lower. Got it in the water last year for most the year working the bugs out. I was never happy with the power output felt like I had somehow screwed up the timing when I set it originally. So last week set out to try and do it again. Got it started for the year it was running like crap and would not idle , (stalled out at 1000rpm). I pulled the carb and had the float replaced. Came home and it was still running terrible on the low end and would stall out a 800rpm. The distributor is a Mallory (new last year). Anyway I pulled it out and I was following the manual today and noted that the pictures do not show what the directions say for install and timing of distributor. Anyways got it back in got it started, stays running at 1500-2000 but sputters occasionally, but can not lower the rpms without it stalling. I have not had much experience with doing the timing , but I am certain I installed it as written in the manual. Is it common for them to run like crap on this initial timing set or should they idle down. I intend to get a tach and light from a friend tomorrow But what are your thoughts on this rough initial timing, what has been your experience..
