overheating sterndrive

1972 omc 225 sterndrive overheats under load. New impeller. New water pump. Logs cleaned. Took thermostat out to see if it overheats Yes it does Thermostat housing top hose hot bottom hose warm. Exhaust exits at intermediate housing not at bottom. Next problem the o/d won't go up solenoid clicks nothing else. Gear wont turn. New motor.

I put a couple things in your thread on the grease fittings for the exhaust.

Most likely, your tilt motor needs repaired/rebuilt. You can purchase a new one, but I've had mine rebuilt for about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of new. Have you already pulled that motor?

This may not be the best way to test your tilt motor, but when i had a similar problem i ran a hot from the battery and tested the motor directly (bypassing solenoids), I have also done this on my trim motor proving both worked or didnt work in my case. I ended up replacing the tilt motor for about 100 bucks after attempting the rebuild on my own...LOL
