Amsoil canister on 1977 OMC

Couldn't upload photos. Said they're to large. There's a rubber hose that runs from the oil pan to a canister marked as AMSOIL located inside motor housing, then from the canister to what looks like a sending unit of some kind. It says under pressure turn off ignition before opening. When opened there is thick grease like substance, couldn't determine how to remove insides that spins. Anyone know what this is and how to maintain it? Waiting on ordered manuals to arrive. Thanks!!

it won't be in the OMC manual - suspect that's some aftermarket gizmo someone added. Probably either a spinner to remove particulate from the oil (lol), or an accumulator to pre-lube the engine at start up (double lol). Either way it should just be removed and disposed of properly.

Took it apart to find that it is some type of oil filter. The oil comes from sending unit to the canister then into the crank case. Filter is real dense to filter the micron residue from the oil.

Is it one of the old Frantz toilet paper filters?

No. It's more like a paper towel roll. The filter is 4"across x8" tall. Any ideas, or just disconnect it. Loop sending unit back to crankcase with hose from unit? Replacing impeller should I rebuild the water pump as well? Haven't been in water in 12-15 yrs. really don't know how long, but long time.

Does the outside look like what I posted? Upload some pictures after you resize them.

Does it have a normal oil filer on there as well?

These are pictures with it taken apart. Yes there is a normal spin on filter. Picture of it mounted. Sending unit that connects to filter. Other connection goes into crankcase.

If this is used in the intake hose at the engine, will it back flush enough to the STERNDRIVE to keep the impeller from being destroyed ?

Yes it will. That is commonly done.

Just make sure to replace that cap when you are done! :)

In order to replace impeller in OMC sterndrive, do you have to separate upper and lower gear cases? What gaskets are needed if this is what has to happen? Is there a way to test it without disassembling? Looking at manual looks as though impeller is located in between upper and lower. Any special tools needed? Thanks!!
