I was just asked by a friend about how to decode a serial number and after 20 minutes of scratching my head, I thought lets ask the pro's!!!!

I attached a pic of the sticker from the engine block. but here is my interpretation

Mod: 384STMRC0M Ser J840390
Mod 983487 Ser: J 3620????

basically, I would like to know more about the Engine and the stern drive, from what have seen the J means its a Johnston, but the next number is supposed to be a HP, but I cant see it.

The engine is a 3.8 Liter V4

I think you were looking up the outboard model numbers. The J does not mean Johnson. That's an outboard motor.

You have a 1985 drive with 3.8L motor.

Also, It is a v6.
The 4v that you are seeing is referring to the carb.

I am not questioning your wisdom, but is it normal for the V4 be a sticker on the Valve cover gasket?

seems like an odd place to specifty what type of Carb is bolted on.

That is where they usually are.
Count your spark plugs.
It stands for 4 venturis (or 4 barrel).

I know counting the spark plugs is the right thing to do, and duh I cant believe I didnt do it :)

I guess I am tired!!!

ok, so if I can also ask, is there any info that can be retrieved about the outdrive itself? is there way to decode that?

I am under the impression that since its a V6 now, it has to be a 800 series Outdrive, but how can you decipher that from those numbers? is it possible?

as always, thanks in advance!

Well this is where I usually excuse myself from the discussion.
I dont know much about the stringers.
We have 3 or 4 members that really know these stringers well.
They will hopefully be along shortly.

Not really. v6 is an 800 Mechanical shift. Go by the HP rating so that your gear ratios match up with another drive. Does 180HP sound right?
