I HAVE A CARAVELLE CLASSI 1880 I/O BOWRIDER YEAR 1990
OMC COBRA 4.3 L ENGINE YR. 1989

ISSUE: ACTING LIKE ITS NOT GETTING FUEL WHEN TURNING ENGINE OVER

TROUBLESHOOTING COMPLETED:

---REPLACED FUEL FILTER
---REPLACED FUEL PUMP
TESTED AGAIN: STILL NOT TURNING OVER:
TESTEDTHE COILS GOING TO THE DISTRIBUTER
--- NOT GETTING ANY SPARK TO THE DISTRIBUTER
MORE TROUBLESHOOTING:
TESTED THE COIL
COIL IS BAD
PURCHASED NEW COIL AND INSTALLED AND TESTED
- WE ARE GETTING SPARK EVERYWHERE NOW ON THE TESTER

TRIED TURNING THE ENGINE OVER AND STILL NOT WORKING

TESTED COIL AGAIN AND COIL IS NO LONGER GETTING SPARK
DISTRIBUTER NO LONGER GETTING SPARK

I AM NOW THINKING THIS IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE?
IS SOMETHING MAKING THE COIL/DISTRIBUTER SHORT OUT?

WHAT IS MY NEXT TROUBLESHOOTING STEP?

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Howdy,

Welcome aboard! (Um, is your CAPS LOCK stuck?)

If you're not getting spark, check the power supply to the "+" side of the coil.

When the key is on (and during cranking) you should have approx battery voltage (and approx 1/2 ALT voltage when running) at that point.

There may be an inline (ballast) resistor that will reduce the voltage during running that is switched out when cranking.

Those "Ballast" resistors are sometimes a ceramic block and are sometimes a piece of (resistor) wire. After 24 years, it could be anything including missing!

If you have voltage there ( at least 6-8v at the "+" terminal) then you need to look at the "other-side" of the coil which should be going to the distributor, points/condenser. You also have a device known as an Electronic Shift Assist Module that can give you problems.

To troubleshoot, you can bypass it altogether by removing the "+" wire(s) from the coil and run a jumper (from coil "+") directly to the battery or other "HOT" + point.
Then (with a flush adapter installed and water running) crank the engine.

The OMC manual is very good for troubleshooting..........

If you do not have an OMC manual, have a look here:--> http://boatinfo.no/lib/omc/manuals/1986-1998omcmanual.html#/392

Cheers,

Rick
