Recently purchased a boat with the OMC Cobra 4.3l Sterndrive, I am a little concerned about this loose wire that looks as if it should and was connected to something at some point. This wire is in between the coil packs and air filter/carburetor also near the alternator. Any help would be appreciated very much.

IMG_20140512_190915_149[1].jpg is where it came out of the wiring harness.

IMG_20140512_190845_510[1].jpg is what the connector looks like.

That's a ground and should be hooked up. Was likely connected to one of the riser bolts at one time.

Re: OMC Cobra 4.3l Wire

Thank you very much! I have noticed that if I charge my battery and go to start the boat 2 to 3 times it will not start it, I do not know if this would cause the charging system to not work but will definitely hook this cable back to a ground.

Very sorry for posting in the wrong section, is my first time on the site.

Probably a different issue. That ground is likely the ignition.

Looks like you have the HO 4.3 model without a distributor. Not sure but I believe that model's ignition system may be tough getting parts for.

Alright, I will have to bolt it down to a good ground and see if maybe it fires off a little better. And that doesn't sound too good, hopefully if i need anything i can find it.

Kyle, from what I remember when removing my spitfire ignition (if that's what you have)... that was a ground terminal.

It's ID is Ring Terminal just below the coil pack in this diagram for mine. It was mounted to the coil pack bolt below the mount.

Have you had this running?

Hi Sam, i thought it looked like a ground to me also, I believe both the spitfire and cobra are pretty similar from what I have seen. I felt around where the wire could reach and did feel one of the nuts was loose on the stud under the coil packs, hoping that is where it should go. I have had this running, runs good but it turned over very slowly with a fully charged marine starting battery for some reason.

I connected the wire that says ring terminal to the bolt sticking out of the bottom of the coil pack housing and for some reason the starter would click like it was going to turn the motor but then nothing...I unhooked this wire and it fired right up fine... i wonder if there is something i am missing or what this wire is really for.

The engine actually started or just turned over?
