Steering Less Than Smooth

'90 Four Winns 200 Horizon. I e noticed when I steer the boat it's not exactly smooth when I turn. As I turn it seems to be smooth, rough, smooth, rough etc. It does it's job but feels like it's catching and it's 100% sequential from hard left to hard right.

What motor?
Model?
Some had power steering, some not.

Have you greased the steering assembly lately? New boat? Look behind the motor, mounted on the transom large pivots and steering ram need grease.

Hmm ok, will do. Steering is easy any smooth. Just feels like I'm catching gears or something with the feeling being so equal through out the turning

Ayuh,.... The only gears involved are at the helm, under the dash,....

You've got either a rotary, or rack, 'n pinion,...
Both got a gear set,...
Both do wear out,....

If yer gonna replace it, go with the Helm, 'n Cable Kit,...

First time ever I just noticed it on mine today. I have the rack n pinion. It feels like the gears are slipping inside. Replace with the Helm and cable? I have the cheesy OMC book for my year (1989 4.3) Will look at options, but that book I have is kind of worthless.

Can not find a part number, and there are a bunch. When I look under my dash I see this on the rack.

I have a huge red cable that goes to the rear of my motor and a cable type gear that hangs off the inside of my steering wheel that's flimsy. And for some reason when trailering my outdrive always turns to the starboard side... Ayuh... bondo you crack me up with your terminology lol I love it! Hahaha keep it coming!

Ayuh,.... Sounds like one of ya needs a new rack, 'n pinion helm, 'n cable, 'n the other needs a new rotary helm, 'n cable,...

Yup.. that's what I'm on search for. Tomorrow I will take it a part and try to track down the part number. (hate to take it a part before new parts are here, but don't want to order the wrong stuff)

Ayuh,.... All ya need is the length of the cable,.... A Rack, is a Rack,....

It should be printed on the outer casin', within a couple of feet of one end, or the other,...

Yer wheel is on a 3/4" taper,...
Find the nut on the shaft, 'n loosen it flush with the shaft end,...
Sit in the seat, 'n use yer knees to PUSH, Off against the wheel,...
Then,... WACK the nut with a BFHammer,....
The wheel will Pop off against the nut, remove the nut, then the wheel,...

THANK YOU.. AWESOME!! That saved me some time!! I will start it in the morning.. I wonder.. is there a more worthless printed book than a Clymer OMC Cobra manual? Thing is going on my next camping trip and being used to start campfires.
