Hello, I am a first time boat owner, but have been around boats in the family my whole life. I just bought a 1987 19'6" Chris Craft LTD. I was told the engine was rebuilt and it is a chevy 4.3. I got the boat from PA and live in Ohio. I wanted to identify the engine more ( year, HP, etc,,) but cannot find he ser# anywhere online. I found the serial number right above the water pump on the block, it is TO416FLF. I have tried searching everywhere with no luck. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks Rick, I looked at the model numbers and parts, but should I be looking at what parts match up with mine and that will give me the model number? Will that model number be stamped on the block too? The engine has been rebuilt, I tried taking the casted number on the manifold and match it up with the numbers for intake manifolds on the site you gave with no luck.
Thanks!

The serial number " TO416FLF" is not the number you need. You need to look on the thermostat housing for the correct model number.

The number you have is the engine serial number. To identify the motor block, look on the back end of the block. On the top of the flywheel housing, there will be a casting number cast into the block. Take that casting number and go here.DezertDimes.com should tell you any thing you need to know to identify your block.
Then when you know the exact year and version of 4.3 you have you can narrow down to model and year of the drive unit and HP. I have an 87 with a 85 block.

Ayuh,... I'm guessin' that's the block stampin' number, which translates to built in Tonawanda, on April 16th, but I can't find the FLF,...

That engine and drive could be around 27 years old. It's very possible that the engine was changed more than once and may be a regl'r truck engine by now.

If you cannot find a model number similar to the list I provided, you may never identify it by model number.

That doesn't mean you cannot service it though. A great many "service" parts are more or less generic for just about all those OMC engines and dog-clutch Cobra drives (if you have a stern drive on the back) Most 4.3L GM engines will produce approx 190hp in good running order.

You're likely not going to determine the HP exactly though....but if the boat will run a respectable speed (40-45 mph for a boat that size) at wide-open-throttle (WOT) and the engine is turning around 4800 RPM at that speed (MAX RPM for most 4.3L marine V-8's) It's probably running "ok". That's using the TLAR method of determination ("That Looks About Right")

Thanks for the info. I will try and check tomorrow and get back to let you know if it works!
