Hears the prob. I can put the mufs on in the yard and it will go into both gears fine, But when in the water its a diff ball game. F is fine, But R it sounds like its not enguaging all the way. All you hear is clicking, But the prop is turning. The more throtttle you give the louder the clicking gets. R is the only prob i have. Any sugestions? Thanks

Re: 2.3l Cobra stern drive problem

It sounds like it's not shifting all the way into reverse. While it turns OK in the air, when it gets the resistance of the water on it, it kicks out of gear. You might get away with adjusting the shift linkage, but it could be that the lower shift cable is sticking and would need replacing. Worst case scenario, the gears are worn out but usually the forward will go first.
You should be able to download a repair manual here Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!.

The cable could need replacing.
The shift mechanism might be corroded.
Drop the drive and clean the bellcrank.
The exhaust flapper might have fell into the shift rod/bellcrank.

Remove the drive, check the adjustment and resistance of the lower shift cable...

You need to replace your lower shift cable. If they get out of adjustment that far, they have failed.

plus 1 on the flapper, cable and may need to check the gears. Drive is gonna need to come off. Its alot easier than u may think. just beware of the shift cable when pulling it off. search youtube on drive removal .

When you pull the drive on a Cobra, just make sure its in neutral. Cable is on the pivot housing so there is really noting to worry about at that point.
