1987 OMC 3.0, will not go into gear

Hello all,

I got all of the engine running issues under control and now we trolled it out into the channel, engine purring like a kitten, went to throw her in gear and NOTHING. UGH! FWD and REV, no moving, no "clunk" when you shift it..

I made out great on the forum with the fuel pump issue, then adjusting timing, and now I hope to have similar success diagnosing and fixing this problem.

Anyone have advice on troubleshooting a shifting issue on this?

How did you get it into the channel?

Does the shift cable move the assembly on the motor? Can you shift it into gear manually by moving lower cable by hand?

If you search this forum you will find TONS of threads about shifting problems. Get to reading.

We got into the channel under the little push from the water pump and the wind was blowing out as well. Once we realized it wasnt going into gear we got pulled back by a dinghy.

I havent looked at it at all yet, but wanted to find a good thread to print out before I go to the boat.


if anyone has a certain thread or two they suggest, I'm all ears
