1996 Volvo Outdrive Needs to be Replaced

The gears sets on my 1996 Volvo SX outdrive are gone. Forward and reverse are not too bad, but the main drive pinion is completely gone; chips everywhere. I thought I would weld it up and re-cut it, but I can't get it out. Somethings holding the vertical shaft so I can't get to the torx to get the pinion out.

I need to replace the drive, but do not know how to match them when shopping. Can you lend advice on what to look for and what to ask? Serial numbers, models numbers, gear ratios, etc...

Thank you,
J

What is the serial number or full (FULL) model number of your engine.

My bad. Unit is 1994, I think. And, I might have the gear ratio.
I found another tag on the top section of the outdrive.
It states product number 3868076 and serial number T0786994 and ratio 1.66.
What other years and ratios are acceptable?

Several things.
It's not a 96 engine and drive. It's a 1994 engine model year (MD) and your serial number is OMC. So you have the OMC version of the joint venture between Volvo and OMC. Not a big problem but to find parts, you need to go to the BRP site for part numbers, not Volvo. There are some things that are different.
The drive you want is an SX with a 1.60:1 gear ratio. Any SX from 94 to 2006 will work fine as long as you replace the complete drive. Which you really need to do.

Since you so have an OMC, I am going to move this over to the OMC forum.

Ok, your number came up in an OMC manual as a 1.66, Volvo used the 1.60, so either one will work just fine.

Don,
Will a 1994 Volvo SX 1.51 gear ratio work?
Thanks,

Ayuh. Whatever....
Is that supposed to help?
If I can do it and not like the results, why would I do it? I'll interpret this as a no-go.
What is engine lug?

Lugging means overloading the engine. You can use the 1.5 drive but you will have to change props to keep your WOT rpm in the proper range. You can also expect some loss of top speed due to improper gear ratio and less pitch in the prop.
