push on the switch arm to activate the switch rocker by hand while the boat is idling. If the engine stumbles, the switch and module are both fine.

Sorry, should have been more specific...

I meant the switch itself with a multimeter, ie specs

Put your VOM in continuity "beep" mode, switch is two position either open or closed.

so according to these last 2 post, the switches are good!

But still nothing happens when they are engaged!

then the ESA module isn't working, or isn't connected to the ignition system correctly

Re: Anyone know how to test an ESA switch, and ESA module?

Ok I have replaced the module, and the switches(needed to anyways)...

STILL NOT WORKING!!!

Guys I really need some help figuring this out!

I have traced all the wires, and they are hooked up.

I have studied the wiring diagram for hours.

Does anyone on here know alot about this, and have time to help?

How does the ESA stumble the engine? Ive heard it "grounds out" the IGN COIL, so couldn't I test the circuit by seeing if once activated the wire going to the coil starts receiving a ground signal?

How can I BENCH test the module to ensure the new one/old one is good/bad? there are no testing procedures/specs in my manual

Someone please help me, I have been playing with this circuit for over a year now. I want to understand it.

If you think you can help, shoot me a PM and I will give you my email, my number, hell my address if necessary!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Thanks guys

I don't think you can. The module is a epoxy sealed solid-state unit. It doesn't "ground" the ignition as much as it "pulses" the ignition.

If you REALLY wanted to see what it does, you would need to put a scope on the output to view it.

Either way, if it's wired correctly and it's not working you probably got another "bad" one.

I remember reading in my OMC service manual too. I don't remember anything but checking for operation. I.E. "if it didn't work, and the switches are NOT defective, replace ESA"

They're something like $80-100 and more......Sorry about that.

Another reason I fixed mine as indicated in my "Sig" below........

Make sure you have power to the ESA module. Make sure the ESA has a good ground.

You can use a jumper wire instead of the switches to get the switches out of the equation. Also realize that the overstroke switch is a normally closed switch so if that is being activated, you won't get a stumble. Basically, the overstroke switch should NOT be activated and the shift switch IS activated.

Re: Anyone know how to test an ESA switch, and ESA module?

disconnect the plug that goes to the 2 switches. It is a very simple circuit that goes through the switches and back to the plug, so you can figure out which 2 pins to jumper. Then start the boat, jumper the pins, and see if the engine stumbles. Mine wasn't working, and when I tested my switches they tested fine. When I jumpered the pins on the plug, the ESA worked. It is possible you have an iffy ground, or switches that are on their way out.
