I need to replace the outdrive on my 1990 OMC cobra 4.3. The model number is 986032.
I found an outdrive off of a 4.3 the model number on that one is 984541. From what I found out by researching it appears to be from a 1987 model.
Can I use the one that I found? Are the gear ratios the same for the 4.3 from 1987 through 1990?
Thanks.

Howdy,

It's probably always helpful if you post the actual model number of the engine/drive package (if available) to get the complete "picture" of what you have

From http://epc.brp.com ,

Your 1990 model hull 4.3L/Cobra package could be any of the following.

432AMLPWS 1990
432APRPWS 1990
434AMLPWS 1990
434APRPWS 1990

or

262AMLMED 1989
262APRMED 1989
432AMLMED 1989
432APRMED 1989

1987 models could be any of the following.

432AMARY 1987
432AMFTC 1987
432APARY 1987
432APFTC 1987
432APSRC 1987
432APSRY 1987
434AMARY 1987
434AMFTC 1987
434APARY 1987
434APFTC 1987
434APSRC 1987
434APSRY 1987

All of the dog clutch Cobras appear to be the same ratio from 1987 to at least 1990. and they're all interchangeable.

It's interesting to note that the BRP parts lists don't seem to indicate the actual OMC part number for the drive assemblies.

Also, the "1987" drive you have may or not be from a 1987 4.3L boat since someone could have swapped that drive more than once over the last 30 years...

The best way to determine the ratio is to turn the input shaft of each drive and count both input(engine) and output (prop) revolutions.....THEN divide the number of input turns by the number of prop turns (each blade of a 3-blade prop equals 0.333, and 0.25 revs for a 4-blade etc)

If they're the same, (or very close) you're "good to go"!.....pretty much all the dog-clutch Cobras are interchangeable from 1987 up into the mid 90's.....As you indicated, you only need to mind the ratio.

Cheers,

Rick
