No output to prop

I was out fishing the other day, trolling. When I started hearing a grinding noise at the back of the engine. There was no output to the prop. What might it be? And how am I suppose to get at it? I have taken the out drive off. But not the mounting.
it is an 1988 OMC with a king cobra out drive.

could be the coupler
could be the upper gear box
could be the u-joints

so if it is the coupler, with the drive off, you pull the motor out of the boat, remove the flywheel housing and replace the coupler. then put the motor back in, align the motor, replace the gimble if needed and reinstall the drive

I think I have figured out that it is the coupler. Is there a way to remove the coupler with out pulling the engine?
