Is a thermostat actually needed on a boat motor or can you just run an open system? If one is necessary is there a difference between auto & marine?

Yes, you need one and yes it will be different on your motor vs the the automotive application of your engine.

Yeah I have been doing a little research. It is for a 1977 351w OMC. I am finding a lot of thermostat housings for sale but not very much as far as just thermostats. Do you know where a good source would be?

You will need the o-ring that holds it up in the housing as well.
