Look for the plate that your lower shift cable connects to. Should be on the back side of that plate.

I think I've found it, but I can't find any wires coming out of the back. Are they hidden somehow? One of the bolts holding it in is straightforward. The other one is connected to several other things. Makes me nervous...

Have a look at the following diagram. #62 is your ESA module.

Thanks for that. It doesn't look like it is connected to any kind of linkage adjustment; that was what I was afraid of.
