305 chevy conversion engine cooling question

I have an inboard 305 in my boat. It has a closed cooling system with an overflow tank. Do I really need the overflow or can I eliminate it? Thanks

you really need the overflow tank. there is not enough expansion volume in the heat exchanger itself.
