OMC 12 hole to 16 hole transom seal conversion

I have an early OMC Stringer, 1966 based on the model number, and my transom seal is leaking bad, I need a new one but 16 hole is the only one I can find, it fits the 1968 drive that looks identical to mine, and some googling says it should fit. Can I use 12 self tapping screws in my old holes? Or what do I do?
