Evinrude 150 1995 Ocean pro steering cable replacement

time to replace and havnt done one in 30 years.Where to begin?? Approx 7 year old cable I had previously repleced17 Mako center console.Steering cable pushes pistonso turning to stbd fine but does not retract to turn to port.Was fun getting it back to dock . Lol do I start at the helm or the motor?? Charlie

Start at the motor end, don't damage the old cable as there's probably nothing wrong with it that a good clean out & grease won't fix.

its broke all right.Works to stbd while the cable is pushing,does not work while the cable should be pulling.

Push the steering rod in to shorten the cable end. Unscrew large nut at motor and pull cable out of tilt tube. Now disconnect at console and pull cable out. If old cable was correct length, replace with same length. Note: Newer cables sometimes do not come without a new helm.

Charlie, Sometimes they cable does not disconnect at the helm. A lot of them are 4 bolts to disconnect the rack from the pinion. You should be able to disconnect the helm from the cable and pull it out.
