I picked up an old boat with a 60 HP Mercury Outboard (around 1985 vintage). I was told that I should remove the automatic oiler. What mix should I use?

Should be a 50:1 mix for that motor.

What model of 60 is it?

You will receive many conflicting views as to removing an automatic oiler. The big question is: Who told you to remove it and why? Is it functioning or not? If you do remove it, then run 50 to 1 gasoline to TWC 3 oil.

Go over to the Mercury forum and ask their opinions.

Many of the auto mix oilers are variable mix systems, as Frank said, who told you to remove it and why did they tell you to remove it?

Does an old automatic oiling system tells you when it's caput ? will tell you when you have already a screwed engine due to oiling system failing. Are variable systems at idle, fast idle, up to certain amout of throtttle, passing that settting all works 50:1 ratio mixing specially if it's a oldie engine. For your peace of mind and credit card, install a new one if with fear will fail at any future time.

Happy Boating
