I will be installing an Evinrude 110hp outboard on a boat that used to run a Mercury. I'm wondering if the bolt patterns will be the same, or will I have to drill new holes in the transom? If I need to drill new holes, is it just a matter of sealing up the old holes with caulk?

Bolt patterns are universal now, but were not always so. So it depends on the years of both motors. If you need to seal the old holes, it is best to use something better than caulk. Wood dowels and epoxy is good. Polyester or epoxy putty is almost as good.

Be sure to use the wood dowels. I'd use 3M 5200 for the sealer.
