Binnacle Merc to Yamaha

I currently have a 2000 Merc 50hp 4 stroke O/B on my boat and will be repowering to a Yamaha F90.
I read that in the early 2000 models Merc power head were Yamaha.
If this is true and other than the cables, can I use the Merc control box for the Yamaha motor?

I would probably check with Merc or Yamaha customer service and ask them this question.

Even if you can, I take it you are upgrading to a much newer motor - why not use newer controls, less risk of problems with the control box down the road.
