First how old is the boat? That rating if on an older boat might be for a 40 2 stroke. Which would make things even worse to throw a heavier 4 stroke on it you could be over the rating even with a 40. If the rating is for a 4 stroke than a 50 would also be a liability if you got into a boating accident. Those plates giving the rating usually break it down by total weight including gear also add in the weight of 2, 3 or 4 people onboard and keep it all under that max rating. Going over the rated HP is a bad idea anyway. I have a 15 footer with a 40 4 stroke. when I recently added a minn kota troller (50 lbs) the trolling battery upfront (55 lbs) my folding boarding ladder (20 lbs) When a 4th person wanted to com aboard I couldn't do it safely. That 4th 150 lb person would have put me way over the max weight limit. so it was either decline or remove the extra 125 of gear to have the rig handle safely.

i wont be having insurance!

Even worse, now your liability is growing even more. Should you get into an accident and do not have the ability to pay you can be sued for operating a watercraft without financial responsibility. You could loose everything you own for the small cost of boat insurance. Insurance statistics show that boaters that boat without insurance are 10 times more likely to have a boating accident that they cause.

Why stop at 50hp? Find an older mariner 60hp 2cylinder 2 stroke they weigh like 160#, I am sure you can find a good used 70 or 90hp motor you can shoe horn on that transom... All of what I said to this point is a joke.

Seriously that rating is on there for a reason, if you need more speed buy a boat that can handle it. No short cuts here. I once looked at buying an over powered boat, before I made an offer I called my states boat commission and asked about an over powered boat. Thay told me I would get a ticket is ever checked, and with what every one has already said it all points to BAD NEWS. What will you gain? couple MPH.
