Hello,

I am wondering about which motor you folks would pick for a kicker motor, the Merc or Nissan, and why?

Thanks,

They are the same motor, with different cowling and trim.

THey are both made by Tohatsu,

So, why not buy the one with the cheaper price?

That would be the Tohatsu. :)

I have a 9.9 merc bigfoot and would trade for a Honda or Yamaha in a second. Hard to start and doesn't idle well compared to those others mentioned. The Honda has a much higher alternator output which really helps if you run electric downriggers and dash electrics while trolling.

Merc 9.9 4 stroke pro-kicker is the BEST kicker ever made. IMHO

Nothing to be confused about.

Tohatsu makes engines and sells them.
THey sell some of them to us.
They sell some of them to Nissan and Mercury, who then sell them to us.

There are a few tiny features that are different, but the mechanicals are the same.

This is an item you can buy based on price, and service availability in your area.

I agree a servicing dealer should be a deal breaker based on availability of parts and of course service.
You might also look for the availability of parts. I think you may find that the 8hp range of any motor parts may be difficult to find.
The 9.9 and 15 of most manufacturers will be better supplied. If you think about it while the difference in power 8 to 9.9
is only about 2 hp it is actually a 25% increase in power.

Roscoe is correct.

I had a 2007 8hp 4 stroke in Tohatsu flavor. It was a great motor, well made and ran perfect. I could buy parts at my local Merc dealer. The only reason I'd pay more for the Merc is for local warranty service....no Tohatsu dealers around here.
