How much should I pay for a 2001 Johnson 150? Good Motors?

I am looking for a new motor and ran into a guy at the shop selling his 2001 Johnson 150. Its a little smaller than I was looking for but will work for my application I believe. I am replacing a 77 Johnson 175 (should have about same power right?. Motor comes with no controls or gauges. Is $3500 a good price? Motor is immaculate and has had regular service since new. (verified by mechanic who does service)

I want to make sure this is a good deal. I will have to buy a $400 wiring harness adapter to use my old controls. I did find a pair of 2002 Johnson 175's with all controls, gauges, steering, and everything for $5500. MAkes me think that $3500 for the 01 is way too high or maybe something was pretty wrong with the 175's (looked just as immaculately kept) Anyone have any input? Any experience with 2001 Johnson 150's out there? Should I be about the same power I was getting from my ancient Johnson 175?

Thanks!

Price is based on local market conditions and what someone is willing to pay.

Hmmm, is that motor a Ficht injected motor? If so, don't buy it.

That's what I've heard. This one is not a fitch though. Found a little older 200hp (99 model) for $2000 im going to go check out. Still mounted on boat so I will be able to check compression and everything. Also found a pair of 98 175's for $4000 with all controls. Going to check these out as well before I go with a 150. Just having a hard time bringing myself to go with anything under a 175 on that big boat. Dual motor set up wouldn't be bad if my hull could handle the weight and bracket...

NADA shows an average retail price of $1600 for that motor.

NADA shows an average retail price of $1600 for that motor.

NADA also shows my 2 tower of power Mercs to be worth less than $400. So much for NADA.

Your two TOPs are worth less than $400, as they are now 25+ years old.

Since you are in TX I would suspect those motors have seen MUCH more use then a motor here up Nprth where our season is short. I would guess they would be cheaper too.

Roscoe and I both live in "short season" areas and our motors have seen less use and yes, with "emotion" we consider them worth more money.

Consider this.......on Craigslist, a newspaper, on the roadside........ those are "asking prices" and most seller's are dreaming big bucks because they sell with emotion. DO NOT buy with emotion, do not be afraid to lowball and show the NADA numbers (the outboard number's are low ;)) There can be a significant variance between "asking" and "sold for" money. I just bought a nice 6' x 8' utility trailer that was listed at $350 and I drove away with it for $150.

Bob, The only thing of value at 25 years old is women. Cars, boats, OBs etc. of that age are not worth much.

Just throwing in my .02. I also had first-hand experience with a '96 175 hp Johnson Ocean Runner and liked it. The carb'd, loop-charged V-6's (from 1994 or so, onward) seem to have a generally good rep. Better on fuel than the earlier motors with cross-flow heads. Can't comment on prices. I've never shopped for a motor alone.

Re: How much should I pay for a 2001 Johnson 150? Good Motors?

I owned a 2001 Johnson 150, and as far as fuel consumption, performance, and reliability, it was the best O/B I ever owned. It was carburated as well. Was better in every way as compared to the late 80's and early 90's Johnson 150's that I had owned. But, $3500 sounds a bit steep, considering you will have to purchase and install a wiring harness. I would think $2200, $2300 would be more in line. Good luck! Rick

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking $3500 was a little steep as well. He was very firm at that price. Luckily I found a good deal on a 1999 Johnson 200hp for $1900. Going to take it to Stone & Sons to have it installed. Jack's got the wiring harness and everything I need over there.
