I have a 13ft aluminum boat and have been running a 1960 evinrude 10hp. that has served me well. I picked up a 1971 johnson 9.5 cheap late in the fall, to late to boat test. I am planning on using 1 or the other. I have read that the 9.5 motors were slow, is this true? witch one is the best motor? this is only for fishing use.

If you look up on youtube tests of the 9.5 and the 60s 10hp and the 70s 9.9 it will give you a good u idea what these motors will do.
Here is my impressions It appears the 9.5 is the slowest by far The 60s 10 hp is a little faster and there is a restored 10 that ran over 20 mph on a light utility. with one adult. The 9.9 is noticeably faster than the rest.
There is no doubt the 50s and 60s 10 hp is much, much easier to work on and are less problematic.

I'd choose the 10 hp over the 9.5 any day...

i own 2 of the 9.5s and ive never owned a 10 hp. if the 10hp runs well i would stick with it. the 9.5 moves my 12ft alcan aluminum quite well, but as said they have some design flaws and not easy to work on.

Go with the 10 hp all day. I had a '61 and it was awesome. It's a much stronger and simpler engine to work on and maintain with tons of interchangeable parts over the years.. They are prone to worn clutch dogs from time to time, but that's easy enough to fix.

well I guess that answers that, I will sell the 9.5, or keep it for a backup, but I am going to try it out first.

I have a '64 9.5, and a '54 10, both Johnsons. As long as it works, and you have someplace to keep it, I vote for keeping the one you don't use as a spare. There are few things worse than a fishing trip with a balky motor. Believe me, I speak from experience.

As for which one is better, that depends on what you're looking for. The 10 is certainly faster, but if you're not going far that doesn't matter so much. The 9.5 is lighter if you need to carry it in or out, and it's easier to fish over - at least, it's easier to fish over than my 10 is. My 9.5 is a lot quieter than my 10 is too - but the '54 models were a lot noisier than the later ones were, anyway.

So which do I use? Well, my brother and I take two boats on our annual fishing trip to the St. Lawrence River. One of them uses the 10, and I have a '56 15HP Johnson on the other. We take the 9.5 along as a spare, and we'd be fine with it on either boat, as I used that 9.5 on the same boat that now has the 15 for around 30 years. But then, the way we fish up there, speed is the most important thing. Going to another place, maybe a small lake, I'd probably trade the 10 for the 9.5. Might even trade the 15 for the 9.5, if I had to carry it very far.

Re: 1960 evinrude 10hp vs 1971 9.5

I like the fact that the 9.5 sits low on the transom, the 10 sticks up quite a bit. speed is not my primary concern, I have a 1959 johnson 5.5 that I take to the small lakes, also have a 1956 evinrude 5.5 that I use also. When I go to the big lake I have to cover alot more area so I take the 10. I think I will keep the 9.5 and sell one of the smaller motors, also I don"t care for those pressure tanks that much.

I have not had much trouble with the pressure tanks. Be sure the hoses on the motor and the tank are in good condition. And it is not hard to put a rebuild kit in the top end of the tank. I have a Evinrude 7.5 that runs as strong as the 9.5. I prefer the Evinrude to the 9.5 Johnson. My favorite is the 1957 10hp I purchased late this fall.

Those older OMC 10 hp seemed more performant than the earlier 9.5 and 9.9. I owned one of the older big block 15 hp and it performed way better than the newer 1972 low profile 15 hp I ended up owning also. The older one = lower rpm torque .... newer = needed high rpm to show power. The newer one had the small size and weight advantage.

Re: 1960 evinrude 10hp vs 1971 9.5

We have a 1970 'Rude 9.5 and put 39 continuous years of service on her without ever spending a dime for service other than normal maintenance. She starts 1st pull every time, idles absotutely perfect and sips gas. She runs only 2 speeds - off and WOT....LOL.

Although she doesn't get too much use these days, that is 1 motor that I will never sell. Compared to a 9.9 on the same boat, yes she was slower, but the difference wasn't worth talking about.

The low profile of this OB is nice for fishing ... never in the way. enjoy.

Re: 1960 evinrude 10hp vs 1971 9.5

if you are just comparing horse power, a half a horse on motors that old can't make any appreciable difference. Same goes with .5 or .1; the motors just under 10 were sold to get under the >10 HP restriction on registration and some lakes. Same with the 48.

the differences are in other aspects of the motors, as discussed here--but I have to wonder if the comparisons from experience even looked at different prop sizes--that's where the rubber meets the road in all this.

When I compared them I looked up the 3 types as many runs as I could find on youtube clearly the 9.5 appeared to be slowest the 10 hp a little better and the 9.9 noticeably faster than all of them.

Your Johnson and Evinrude will last a long time and be easy to fix. Chrysler parts are hard to find. Keep the other 2 - you can switch back when the Chrysler fails.

Three motors isn't even a collection yet. My wife said I had too many motors when I got to about 50. I didn't agree with her and bought another dozen or so.

I have about 12 motors, 4 smaller 5 or 5.5 hp, also picked up a 30hp Chrysler long shaft, anyway I just realized this 9.9 Chrysler is a longshaft, I'm not a Chrysler fan but the prices were so cheap I couldn"t pass them up, you guys know how that goes.
