If your mtor is electric start, it should have a stator under the flywheel and a rectifier on side of the block to change the AC stator current to DC for charging the battery. A '77 35hp should not have an alternator as far as I know. ALso, the stator only produces enough charge for maintaining a battery, not for charging it. Never run an outboard with a weak battery. It can cause all sorts of problems. Very few outboards in the 35hp range produce enough current to actually charge a trolling motor battery or cranking battery that is low.
