First post here. Looking at both of these engines on comparable Crestliner boats. Both boats emply minus engine weigh approximately 1100lbs. Mostly fishing with some towing of tubers and possibly a smaller skier. I probably will do some lake Michigan trolling and am not sure how the 2-stroke will perform. I thought I wanted a 4-stoke, but the newer and larger Mercury is attractive. Any issues with either of these engines?

I have 32 Evinrudes in my collection and only 3 Mercs. I wouldn't run an old Merc on MY boat. Nevertheless, in this scenario I would go for the Merc. Its newer and built in a time when Mercs were better. The Rude was built just before OMC went belly up. Neither will be ideal for trolling, so plan on adding a kicker.

No worries about the Rude, it's a Suzuki DF70 with an OMC paintjob and controls. Heavy but good engine with a great track record. My Johnson version sits at ~1500 hours and not a single issue. Pushed my 16' 1000# Mr.pike to 37mph with just me and would still go 34mph with a full live well and 4 husky adults. Trolls down to about 2.4mph at idle with an 18 pitch prop and can do it all day long with a single hiccup burning a single gallon every 3-4 hours trolling.

How many hp are the hulls rated for?

The 4 stroke may be a good motor, but the extra 20 hp the 90 offers may be the difference between good performance and an unhappy boat owner.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that Merc either.

I have a Merc 90HP 2 stroke, built in 2008. So far I've been very happy with it. Pushes my 18' quite nice.
