Seller has no idea what the number is and is a few hours from me.

Any idea based on paint and look as to what the year is?

Thanks in advance.:)

I can't tell you the exact year but I've seen one just like it listed as a 1987.

1978. They didn't have that shaped cowl into the 80's.

I noticed that listed and actual are quite often very different.

EZ - I think you nailed it. Thanks

SHhhhhhhhhhhh ! :decision:

So it looks like they made this motor from '78 to 94. Anyone have any review or advice. I would check it out, compression, spark, LU. Don't think I'd be able to run it.

I have an '85 90hp V4 - Is this 140 just a larger version of the 90 or is it a completely different beast.

Would you switch out the '85 90 hp for the '78 140? Given all things are equal in terms of condition. I used to have a '70's 135 and everyone said don't use that motor.

Thanks for any input.

That is a '78, I have one just like it. I have an '86 90 too. The differences are:

Bigger carbs - 1 5/16" vs 1 3/8
The ports are cast higher in the cylinder(s) on the 140
Bubble back exhaust vs flat back

Besides that just about everything else is interchangeable.

Are you kidding? I would run the 140 in a heartbeat! I'm currently running an '83 140 on my 15' Baja. Top speed increased from 54.8 with the 90, to 62.9 with the 140. Purty substantial in my book?

Naturally it's a lil thirstier ...

V - Great info, thanks.

Current boat with the JohnyRude 90 max speed is about 40. Boat is used most for cruising, skiing and tubing. Don't run over 30mph for much of anything. Lots of smaller lakes.

How would the 140 compare in the 0- 30 mph range in terms of hole shot, acceleration and fuel consumption?

Well, it's a purty safe bet you'd see better hole shot. And it'd give ya a lot more 'grunt' for pulling toys.

If yer gonna cruise @ 30 try to find a prop that'll let the motor turn 3000 rpm, or thereabouts. Kinda a magic # with these motors.

Far as fuel consumption you'll probly see a slight increase, but at those kind of speeds you won't hardly notice.
