I have an opertunity to purchase a new 2005 Mercury 25 hp Sea Pro (Tohatsu made) 2-stroke or a new 2009 Yamaha 25 hp 2-stroke.

The questions I have are:

1. Which one will troll better.
2. Do both have iron cylinder sleaves so if needed it can be bored out for oversize pistons on rebuild.
3. Which is more reliable.
4. Which is easier to service.
5. Which might last longer.
6. Parts availability

Any help is apreciated.

Thanks,

My vote is for the yamaha. Both are good motors.
Both are fairly easy to service, both troll good, both have good parts availability as far as I know. There really isn't much that needs servicing other than an occasional carb rebuild and impeller change----both are about the same on either motor--easy.
There's no telling which would last longer. Unless the motor is going to be used for commercial use, reboring shouldn't be a worry. I'm almost positive that both can be bored and oversize pistons are available---not 100% sure...
They sold lots of 25 yamahas, so used parts should be easy to find as well.

You can update a Mercury 25 HP to 30 HP for about $ 8.00. Both 25 & 30 are same brothers, one just restricted. The trottle system on the Merc is much friendly to service, the impeller lasts more than double than the Yam, other than that both brands have lots of fans.

Happy Boating
