I have a 1992 75 horse on a 89 Skeeter.Yesterday while out on the lake,I got a "warning" beep, beep, beep coming from the shift control box.At first I thought I might be low on oil but that is not the case. This "beep" comes on when the key is in "run" postion and the motor is not even running. The engine ran fine on my return to the dock. Help!! What does this mean? Thanks ahead for any and all responses.

I don't have a water pressure gauge, but water is discharging from the "pee" hole.New impeller installed last year, with little use on engine.

When you say it beeps when the motor is not running, is that cold or hot? In other words, does it do it when the motor is cold, or when you just got done running it or both? From what you've posted, I tend to lean toward a wiring problem(Loose Wire, Ect), because I don't think you would have made it very far if the VRO had failed! Did the motor still run well after you got back to the dock and have you run it since? Just trying to rule out oil problems and overheating problems! Rick

Motor ran fine after "warning" beep started.I was about 3 miles from the dock when this occured and just figured, what the hey,I've got to get back.Motor did not seem hot or smokey.I turned the key to run position this morning (boat on trailer in my yard) cold motor naturally and the beep still occurs.

Re: Beeping from Shift Panel

I'm not real familiar with the Merc Vro, but that is where I would start. Sounds like it's either a false "No Oil" signal or a false overheating problem. I would check the sending unit to the VRO and the wiring to it. I'm not sure if you have a float type "Low Oil" switch in your tank, but I would check for that also. Others may be more familiar with your setup and hopefully can pick up from here. At least you can get it to duplicate the problem when it's on the trailer! That's a big plus!! Rick

Re: Beeping from Shift Panel

I have a 93 Merc 200. I don't have the manual handy, but I vaguely remember reading about the oil warning alarm when the key is in the Run position. By the way, the beep...beep...beep is the oil warning and water sensing module alarm. Temperature alarm is a continuous beep. Since your getting the alarm without the engine running, I can't guarantee the accuracy of this, but I seem to remember reading that it may be the sensor on the oil injection pump. I'll try to remember to look it up in the manual when I get home.

<*}}}><

On the bottom of the oil tank is two wires. Dissconnect one and if the beep stops you found your problem. Make sure the float inside the tank is not stuck.

If the sensors are ok, the warning module is bad.

I checked the manual, and here is what it states:

Problem:
Warning Horn stays ON when ignition Key is turned to "ON" Postition.

Possible Cause:
No battery voltage to warning horn (+) terminal.

Corrective Action:
Check PURPLE wire from key switch to horn for open and check keyh switch for open.

Possible Cause:
Open PURPLE wire going to warning module.

Corrective Action:
Check for battery voltage on PURPLE wire at warning module with key in "ON" position.

Possible Cause:
Faulty warning module.

Corrective Action:
Check connections - replace module.

Possible Cause:
TAN/BLUE wire between warning horn and module shorted to ground.

Corrective Action:
With key switch in "OFF" position and TAN/BLUE wire disconnected from terminal block, check between end of disconnected wire and engine ground. There should be no continuity.

Hope this helps
<*}}}><

Thanks Bassscratcher,I did locate the wires coming from the bottom of the oil tank and disconnected one and yes the alarm turned off.I'll follow up on your last post to further isolate the problem. Thanks again for your help.
