I saw this motor for sale and it looked like a good deal but my problem is my boat needs a 20in shaft? So my question is can you turn a 2004 mercury 40hp 4 storke efi 15in shaft in to a 20in shaft? Or could I get a jack plate for it and bring it 5 inches down or would that not work and look odd? how much would i be looking at to change the motor in to a 20inch shaft if I could?

It will cost whatever a complete 20 inch leg would cost. Where you find it and whether you buy new or used has a large bearing on the cost.

Depends on the boat but sounds like a recipe for backwash swamping the motor. Jackplates are generally added to raise the motor, not lower it more than its design limit.

I found the solution check .Bay manufacturing makes extenion kits for almost all motors. Only $420 for the kit for my motor. http://www.baymfg.com/index.asp

Not much detail here other than a kit part number. I hope it includes the longer drive shaft and that you know how to replace the existing one with the longer one.

The Bay Mfg kits are complete, I just took one off my old Merc to make it short shaft.
Had 5" extenisons for the housing, exhaust tube, water tube, shift rod, drive shaft and all the longer
bolts and studs.
