Hey all

I've recently become a boat owner for the first time and I'm trying to narrow down the year of my motor. It's a 40 HP Johnson. I've managed to find super quiet somewhere on the motor, as for the data plate it's conviently missing. The number on the top plug isn't much help to me either. I think it's about a 66 but can't be too sure, the pics I found online were kind of blurry. I've included some pics. Mind you there are wires strewn every which way and she's still wearing ages of dirt.

Re: Johnson's Age

It's at least a 58-59 super quiet Big Twin, that's when they came out with the super quiet design. But it's a 40 hp, so that means it's 59-60 or later, the first super quiet Big Twins were 35 hp and later became 40 hp's. My educated guess is 59-60 up to 62-63, but I'm not real familiar with the 60s motors. Like Willy said, post the numbers on the engine plug. Check up under the front belly pan...on top of the transom clamp assembly...that's where the ID plate should be...may be just covered up with grime. You have to swing those old motors way right or left to really read the plate sometimes.

That must be a serial number. To accurately date it, you need to look for a model number somewhere on the motor. Johnson labeled the Big Twins as RD...an RD-22, the first 40hp models, came out in 1960. RD-23 is 61, RD-24 is 62, etc.

Had the same problem yesterday with a 60HP Evinrude. Some of the forum experts have s/n records access and may post in to help you out.

Thanks for the info guys. It at least gives me an Idea. Can I safely assume most parts in that year range for the 40 will match.

The older Johnsons had the model number embossed on the port side of the powerhead. I had a motor exactly like yours and it was a 1968. As I recall, the green and white color with that style hood went until about 1972. The 1965's and older were all white.
