Suck real hard on an empty soda bottle and see what happens. That should help you understand the reason why the vent must be open. Air needs to replace the fuel you are extracting from the tank. Create a vacuum as you would with the vent closed, and the fuel pump can no longer pump fuel.

You should leave it vented alittle all the time, changes in temp can drastically change the pressure in the tank, the air need to be able to come and go.

Got gas one morning in my 6 gallon tank and left it in the bed of my truck with the vent closed, went to get it out that afternoon and it looked like a balloon, lucky it didn't let go in the back of my truck.

But yes when running you are pulling gas out of the tank and that needs to be replaced with air.
