I plan to purchase a 16ft alumnacraft lunker 165 ltd dry weight about 700 lbs. I bet my merc will push it 20-22 mph. I can trade for a 20hp honda. Should I stay with the merc or should I go with the new honda. Top speed is my biggest issue. All comments appreciated.

I wouldn't even consider buying a new boat with a 2-stroke on it. But you say speed is your concern. Enjoy.

At 700# dry weight I don't think either engine will be big enough for that boat. Is it the Tiller or Side steer version? By the time you add the engine, trolling batteries, gas, fishing gear, and a person or 2 you are going to be well over 1000#. If it a tiller you need a 40hp bare minimum to get it on plane and moving, 50hp for a side steer. My Lund is 690# dry and 1200-1300# with 3 batteries, 12 gallons gas, fishing gear, and a 70hp 4 stroke. Its a 16' side steer and I wasn't happy with a 50hp on the back, with 3 people aboard and the livewell full of water is WOULD NOT PLAIN OUT.

Wow I would never expected that. May I ask what type of speed were you getting at WOT.

My merc 25hp 2 cylcle pushes a 600lb (dry) Fischer avenger 14' sc with 2 people (220 lb each) and water in the live well, 2 batteries and a trolling motor into 20mph and planes the boat with no problem.

I think you will be dissapointed with the little 4 stroke.I think it will struggle to match your 25s performance.
If your thinking of new give the Evinrude Etec a close look and go for at least 2/3 of the rated horsepower. They make a 2 cylinder in 40,50 and 60 hp versions about 240 lbs.

With the 50hp Johnson 2 stroke I seen 31 mph gps running alone (17 pitch prop), 26mph with 2 people and a full live well with it taking ~15 seconds to plane (15 pitch prop). 3 people it would do 24mph if everyone moved up to the front casting platform to get it to plane out.

With the 70hp 4 stroke I'm seeing 38mph alone, 35mph with 3 people and the livewell full of water.

I looked up the specs of the Lunker 165 and I found it strange that its only rated for a 50hp counsel / 40hp tiller. most other boats with the same length and beam are rated for much higher hp numbers and if you run the numbers through the coastguard equation you come up with a rating of 110hp. The basic 16 foot Lund Alaskan is rated for a 75hp counsel / 50hp tiller and its a smaller boat. I'm not knocking Alumacraft either, I think they build good boats and rank right up there with Lund and Crestliner

Since you already got the Merc 25Hp. If its just a clamp on tiller. Try it out when you get the boat. It will be easy to clamp on. If you like it keep it. It will be a quick and easy test. Chances are you will have to lower the pitch of the prop on the new boat. This will tell you how it will perform without spending money on the new motor. If you don't like it you can trade it in.

if you are looking for speed you definitely want to go with a 2 stroke they make power on every revolution and are much lighter four strokes make power on every other revolution and are much heavier this vid can explain it much better then i can
