I do a lot of trolling (hours). I was told to make one of my tanks a trolling tank of 100:1. 85 Johnson 40hp. Any thoughts?

no! stay with 50:1. the 100:1 was recalled by Johnson, to many bearing going bad, due to lack of oil.

Since most oil injection/mixing system lean out the mix at idle( some leaner than 150:1) a mix of 100:1 @ idle/no load is not unreasonalble. However make sure you switch back to your regular mix and run enough gas thru to insure you have the 50:1 in the carbs before you speed up.

Personally, if it runs good at 50:1 then stick with it. Very expensive way to find out that 100:1 was no good !!!

that's what we decided too, it says to run our rudie 100:1 but only if you use evinrude oil, but we just decide not to risk it and run 50:1

Jimmbo -- your advice is sort of correct but very wrong for J/E engines. J/E ratio at idle is 75:1 and 50:1 otherwise. 100:1 is real risky.

Re: Fuel mixture for 2 cycle

Prior to 1990 VRO reduced the oil @ idle to 150:1, 1990 - 1992 100:1 @ idle, after 1993 the renamed system Oil Metering System (OMS) averaged 60:1, slightly leaner @ idle, slightly richer @ full throttle.

Great article. I have saved it in my boating info on the computer. I have a 140hp 1985 Johnson. I will be checking it for upgrades etc when the cover comes off in spring. So far it has given no problems and it does have the black cap on it. It is a little smokey when first starting up after priming the bulb though, however I do know it is getting enough oil when it does this so I am not too concerned. Once it has run at idle for a minute or so it is fine.
Thanks for posting the link.
Ken.
